Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen made his fourth visit to Israel on Sunday in an effort to reinforce the U.S. military’s already strong bond with the Israel Defense Force (IDF). As the Jerusalem Post noted, “Mullen declared Sunday during a visit to Tel Aviv that he always tries to view the regional threats from an Israeli perspective.”
He met with Military Intelligence Chief Major-General Amos Yadlin and IDF Chief of General Staff Lieutenant-General Gabi Ashkenazi to discuss naval strategies surrounding the recent Gaza flotilla incident as well as regional threats to Israel concerning military activities in Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. Mullen emphasized the importance of these meetings in a statement:
We have met many times, but the meetings here to me are oftentimes the most important because it is recognition of the importance of the relationship, the strength of the relationship and the criticality of the relationship and the constant need to focus on issues that continue to emerge and challenge the both of us.
Ashkenazi thanked Mullen for his support saying:
I consider him a personal friend when it comes to issues pertaining to Israel’s security.
