This weekend, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano received a national leadership award from the New York Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty in recognition of the Obama Administration’s efforts to safeguard the Jewish community. At the event, Napolitano spoke about her department’s efforts to combat terrorism, as well as the administration’s cooperation with domestic Jewish organizations and the State of Israel.
Joining Napolitano were a number of prominent New York and Jewish officials including Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Representatives Charlie Rangel (D-NY), Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), and Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Speaker of the New York State Assembly Shelly Silver, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hines, NY State Education Department Chancellor Merryl Tisch (who also serves as the chairperson for the Met Council), City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, and White House Jewish Liaison Jarrod Bernstein.
