In a campaign season notable for nasty Republican smears, the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) is disturbed about Representative Scott Garrett’s (R-NJ) increasingly nasty campaign against Rabbi Dennis Shulman for New Jersey’s fifth Congressional District.
“As Garrett sees his incumbency seriously challenged by Shulman, his ads gets nastier,” said Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of NJDC. “This untruthful and slimy line of attack on Shulman says more about Garrett’s desperation than anything about Shulman.”
Garrett’s recent direct mail piece and television ad are just his latest attempt to smear Shulman. Garrett’s direct mail pieces pose the question, “Should we be talking with terrorists? Dennis Shulman thinks so.” This smear is superimposed over a menacing image of armed Hamas terrorists. The back of the mailer reads, “Shulman is an extremist who believes America must negotiate with terrorists.”
Like Garrett’s direct mail, the campaign’s television ad works to paint Shulman as an extremist who is sympathetic to terrorists. The ad asks, “What do we really know about Dennis Shulman, the man who is smearing Scott Garrett?” A scary and menacing voice then warns, “Shulman is an extremist who believes America must negotiate with terrorists.”
“There is no other reason for this type of messaging except to try to exploit Jewish fears about the security of Israel,” said Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of NJDC. “It is simply not a credible argument to Jewish voters that Shulman, who has a strong policy and deep passion for Israel, would advocate negotiating with Hamas terrorists.”
What’s even more disappointing is that Mr Garrett has presented himself as a friend of the Jews, yet his voting record does not line up with supporting the issues most American Jews care about. I had the privilege of meeting Dennis Shulman and interviewing him for the Jewish Advocate in Boston several months ago, and I believe he would be a forceful and articulate voice for change in this country, while also being a strong voice for Israel and the causes that matter to the Jewish community.
I am pleased that NJDC is giving Dennis’s campaign some much-deserved attention. Mr Garrett’s voting record shows he is one the most extreme of the right-wing ideologues. In a time of crisis such as this one, we need people who can move beyond ideology and promote new solutions that will help ALL Americans, not a select few. I see no evidence that Mr Garrett believes in bipartisanship. I see a lot of evidence that Dennis Shulman does.
