NJDC Statement on the 49th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act

NJDC Executive Director Rabbi Jack Moline released the following statement marking the 49th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965:

“Forty-nine years after the signing of the landmark Voting Rights Act, we are still fighting for the right to vote. Since the U.S. Supreme Court’s Shelby County v. Holder decision, the rights of millions of voters have been put in peril. Consequentially, there has been an unprecedented rise in restrictive voter ID laws that would have previously been held as being invalid and illegal.

Protecting voting rights is an American issue, not a partisan one. Congress has the constitutional authority and a moral responsibility to protect our voting rights. NJDC values the fundamental right to vote for every citizen of our nation, and the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014 will ensure that these basic rights are protected. We urge Congress to enact VRAA. “
