NJDC Condemns Paul Amendment to Cut Foreign Aid to Israel

National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) President and CEO David A. Harris today issued the following statement condemning the amendment proposed by Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) that would cut American foreign aid to Israel:

The National Jewish Democratic Council condemns Representative Ron Paul’s (R-TX) latest attempt to end foreign aid to Israel through an amendment to the 2012 budget that specifically stipulates an end to American aid to Israel. We also denounce the ‘Dear Colleague’ letter that Paul is circulating in order to gain support for his reckless and irresponsible plan. Politico reported that his letter characterizes foreign aid as an ‘attempt to purchase friends’ through ‘lavish gift[s] to foreign leaders.’

As we said following Paul’s second consecutive victory in the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) straw poll, ‘Paul has never missed an opportunity to vote against the U.S.-Israel relationship,’ and his latest attempt, both in substance and in style, is par for the course.

NJDC implores House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), and House members from both sides of the aisle to immediately denounce Paul’s outrageous letter and urge their colleagues to reject Paul’s amendment. The U.S.-Israel relationship depends on it.

Paul, through his letter, amendment, and recent CPAC straw poll victory, continues to embody a Republican Party that is moving further and further to the right—and a conservative movement that fails to stand up for many of the policies and values that American Jews hold dear.
