The New Republic’s Jonathan Chait published a brief blog post dispelling the myth that President Barack Obama is responsible for the current high deficit. Citing the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, which attributes much of the deficit to President George W. Bush’s policies, Chait provided a chart that shows that Obama’s proposed budget and policy proposals will lower the deficit over time. Chait concluded his piece:
... the political reality is that Republicans have had enormous success in convincing people that the Obama administration has caused the dire fiscal situation. Correcting that untruth is worthwhile.
Chait’s recommendation is especially fitting as conservatives, including Tea Party activists, converge on Washington for the Glenn Beck-headlined CPAC Summit and continue to propagate the myth that Obama and progressives are bankrupting the United States.
Chait’s recommendation also coincides with Obama’s decision to create a bipartisan fiscal commission headed by former Senators Alan Simpson (R-WY) and Erskine Bowles, President Bill Clinton’s White House Chief of Staff.
