The White House issued a statement on Wednesday reiterating its continued support of Israel in light of recent events in the Middle East. The statement was released following a meeting between Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, National Security Advisor Tom Donilon and other senior officials. The meeting involved discussions on the situation in Egypt, preventing a nuclear Iran, the Middle East peace process, “and other regional and bilateral issues.”
According to the White House statement:
[Secretary Gates, Secretary Clinton, and Mr. Donilon] stressed the United States’ unshakeable commitment to Israel’s security, including through our continued support for Israel’s military and the unprecedented security cooperation between our two governments.
Earlier this week, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs conveyed a similar position when he announced to the world that “[r]egardless of the situation facing any government in the region, our friendship, our partnership and our alliance with Israel is unchanged.”
Barak also met with CIA Director Leon Panetta, National Security Council senior official Dennis Ross, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) during his visit to the United States this week.
