President Barack Obama sent a personal letter to Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren wishing him a shanah tovah - happy and sweet New Year. Obama wrote:
Dear Ambassador Oren,
As you and Sally gather with friends and prepare for the High Holidays, I want to thank you for your friendship and wish each of you a meaningful Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This holy season is a time of reflection: a chance to reaffirm friendships and renew our commitments - including America’s unshakeable commitment to the State of Israel.
I am proud that, today, the security cooperation between our two countries is stronger than it has ever been. That is because the ties between us are unbreakable, and because the security of the State of Israel is non-negotiable. In this, we will never waver.
Michael, your life of service embodies the bonds between our nations—not bad for a kid from Jersey. To you, Sally, Yoav, Lia, and Noam, and to all those gathered with you tonight, Michelle and I wish you a good and sweet New Year. L’Shana Tovah.
Sincerely,
Barack Obama
