Our New Ad on Energy Independence

This week, the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) launched a new ad highlighting the strong support for energy independence by Senator Barack Obama. This is the latest ad in a national ad campaign that will continue to appear in local Jewish newspapers across the country until Election Day.

"The pursuit of energy independence is among the most important issues facing the Jewish community, and Senator Barack Obama understands that less Middle East oil means a more secure Israel," said Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of NJDC.

The ad, which focuses on energy independence, states:

Energy independence.

Barack Obama understands that less Middle East oil means a more secure Israel.

Reducing our dependence on foreign oil is vital both for America and for strong U.S.-Israel relations. Obama’s comprehensive energy plan moves the country to alternative sources of energy and significantly reduces our dependence on Middle East oil, enhancing the U.S.-Israel relationship.

It’s time to end our dependence on Middle East oil.

I don’t entirely disagree with the premise that, in the short run, greater dependence on Middle East Oil prevents the further enhancement of U.S.-Israel relations but I think that in the long run this is not true if energy independence is actually acheived.  The reason that the U.S. has been an important ally of Israel for a long time has mostly to do with the importance to the U.S. of stability in the region which in turn preserves the stability of the flow of oil to this country.  It would be nice to believe that our support for Israel is based upon our support for this small thriving democracy managing to survive within a cespool of totalitarian regimes but the realities are economic in nature.  Israel’s military dominance in the region means that it could easily destablize the Middle East by launching preempative attacks to defend herself against hostile neighbors Doing so would almost certainly cause the price of oil to skyrocket thereby impacting the U.S. economy.  Informed people should not be so ignorant as to believe otherwise.  A little dependence on Arab oil in the Middle East is actually good for Israel from a geopolitical level.
