Rabbi Gutow Urges Jewish Action on Climate Change

Rabbi Steve Gutow, former NJDC Executive Director,  published an op-ed in The Washington Jewish Week urging Jews to take action in the fight against climate change and global warming. Gutow writes that it is imperative for Jews to take part in greening our communities so that we can “act in defense of God’s creation.”

According to Gutow:

Major changes have to be made within the Jewish community. We must call on every Jewish institution to create green teams or sustainability committees, to develop action plans and set specific goals. We must educate our children and ourselves about the importance of these decisions and the need to carry them forward. We must involve our entire community in political advocacy, so that our work becomes part of a larger, national effort to avert further destruction and repair the damage already done, through the creation of green jobs and the enactment of substantive environmental legislation.

Finally, we must support and reinforce each other’s policies and actions, so that the efforts of one serve to leverage those of others. The actions of each matters deeply—and the actions of all add up to far more than the sum of our parts. Working together, the American Jewish community can have tremendous impact on U.S. environmental policy and the health of the planet on which we live.
