Rick Barber, an Alabama Republican running for the House of Representatives, has publicly called out for President Barack Obama’s impeachment, and appears to advocate for an armed revolt against the government.
In a highly reactionary TV advertisement that aired this past week, Barber appears at a table with actors dressed as Benjamin Franklin, Sam Adams, and George Washington. Before he begins railing about the “tyrannical” current administration, the camera fixates on a revolver as Barber says the words, “I would impeach him.”
Against a military drumbeat in the background, Barber attempts to incite fear of government, of “malicious audits” by the IRS, and even of the court system. By evoking revolutionary sentiment, utilizing wartime imagery, and referring to “evils [being] perpetrated,” it seems as if Barber may be calling for an all-out uprising against the government.
The spirit of his message is epitomized in the last seconds of the ad. “Are you with me?” Barber passionately asks the Founding Fathers. One dramatically replies, “Gather your armies!”
Barber, a political novice, spurred a runoff in the Alabama Republican primary, garnering 28 percent of the vote. He is firmly supported by Tea Party because he is campaigning on a platform of eliminating all income and corporate taxes. Barber is just the latest in a chain of Republican candidates who have been campaigning with extreme rhetoric and imagery.
