RJC Questions Rep. Berman’s Commitment to Israel

Earlier this week, the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) got into an online argument with Americans for Peace Now (APN) by attempting to tarnish House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Representative Howard Berman’s (D-CA) pro-Israel record. Upon hearing about Berman’s remarks at an event with APN activists, RJC tweeted this:

RJC: Powerful Dem encourages anti-#Israel fringe RT @tabletmag Howard Berman Fears ‘Immense Toll’ of Occupation http://tinyurl.com/ydj8eaw #jcot

For those of you who do not read twitter script, RJC said “Powerful Democrat encourages the anti-Israel fringe because he fears the ‘immense toll’ of the occupation.”

When asked by APN “Is there anybody… foolish enough to label the Foreign Affairs chair anti-Israel?” RJC stated that they stood by their tweet. APN then grilled RJC about whether or not they thought former Israeli Prime Ministers Yitzhak Rabin, Ariel Sharon, and Ehud Barak and former Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Abba Eban “encouraged” the anti-Israel fringe for praising and supporting the positions of Israel’s Shalom Achshav. RJC did not offer a coherent response about their bizarre tweets, but APN’s Noam Shelef drew an interesting conclusion:

The RJC’s attack on Berman was transparently about petty partisan politics. And peace for Israel is more important than that.

The fact is, Berman is strongly supportive of Israel and RJC should have known better than to play politics with the US-Israel relationship.
