Governor Jennifer Granholm of Michigan blogged recently on the Huffington Post about the future of her state and the auto industry. Granholm applauded the Obama administration’s efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions and said that her state would lead the way for a new breed of automobile and noted:
In Michigan, we’re not only redesigning the current generation of vehicles to be more fuel efficient, but as the world’s epicenter for automotive research and design, we’re literally redesigning the entire notion of the automobile.
Granholm highlighted “perfecting the battery” as one of the industry’s newest obstacle.
It looks like the battery problem may have been solved by Shai Agassi, a former software executive and founder of Israel’s Better Place, an electric vehicle services provider. Agassi plans to replace gas-powered cars with battery-powered cars that swap batteries and recharge in as little as just five minutes.
Agassi, who was named in the 2009 TIME 100 is currently partnering with governments to install the Better Place infrastructure in Israel, Denmark and the San Francisco Bay area.
