State’s Rosenthal Confronting Anti-Semitism in Saudi and Palestinian Textbooks

The State Department announced that it will be conducting a study of anti-Semitic content that is currently ubiquitous in Saudi Arabian textbooks. JTA wrote that Hannah Rosenthal, the State Department’s Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, recently toured the Middle East and “confronted Saudi officials with examples of anti-Semitic statements in the kingdom’s texts used as far afield in Saudi-funded schools in Pakistan and Argentina.” She specifically cited the anti-Semitic trope that Jews are descended from “monkeys and pigs” during her meeting with Saudi officials as a prime example of anti-Semitism in Saudi textbooks. Saudi officials reportedly denied her claim and told her that if anti-Semitic material is found in Saudi textbooks, the books will be altered.

JTA also noted that a similar study is being conducted by the State Department with Palestinian textbooks, which are notorious for promoting anti-Semitism and anti-Israel incitement within their pages. Both of these studies are reflections of just how seriously the Obama Administration views global anti-Semitism. The studies are important, concrete actions intended to combat anti-Semitism in the Arab and Muslim worlds.

There is a positive aspect to the The Saudi Arabian text book claims that “Jews are descended from monkeys and pigs”: they have invoked the principle of Darwinian evolution. Once they stop using it for their embarrassing and pathetic anti-Semtism, they will have taken a major step toward modern biology. We can be grateful for a first step.
