Below are some of Monday’s questionable right-wing statements and decisions:
- Private security for Alaska Senate candidate Joe Miller (R-AK) handcuffed a reporter for allegedly trespassing at a town hall event. The security company claims that the event was “private,” however Miller’s campaign publicized the event by inviting supporters and their “friends, colleagues, family, acquaintances, neighbors” on Facebook.
- It was revealed that Tea Party-backed Florida Congressional candidate Allen West (R-FL) appears to have a close association with a motorcycle club categorized as “criminal” by the Department of Justice and FBI.
- While speaking to a Hispanic student group, Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle (R-NV) said some of the students looked more Asian than Latino.
- Angle also attempted to address the recent controversy regarding her “illegal aliens” ad.
- Colorado Senate candidate Ken Buck (R-CO) compared being gay to alcoholism. Buck also said that being gay is a “lifestyle choice.”
- When asked about how to pay for the extension of Bush-era tax cuts, California Senate candidate Carly Fiorina (R-CA) stumbled over her response and ultimately failed to answer the question.
- In a similar situation, Buck gave a similar, vague response.
- In the heated Kentucky Senate debate on Sunday, candidate Rand Paul (R-KY) called his opponent a “disgrace,” and refused to shake his hand before walking off stage.
- TPM reported that Paul may not attend his next scheduled debate.
- Washington Senate candidate Dino Rossi (R-WA) accused his opponent of “class warfare” against small businesses for not supporting an extension of the Bush tax cuts for the upper income brackets. A Washington Post article reported that only less than 2% of small businesses would be affected if the tax break for the upper income bracket ended.
- It was revealed that New York gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino (R-NY), who flaunts his anti-choice views, counts a Planned Parenthood clinic among his tenants and even used them to lobby for a tax break.
- The cover of the publication We The People features Texas Congressional candidate Blake Farenthold (R-TX) in rubber duck-patterned pajamas next to a scantily-clad woman.
