On Sunday, Republican presidential candidate former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) received the backing of pastor Dennis Terry who, when introducing Santorum, delivered this message to non-Christians [emphasis added]:

I don’t care what the liberals say, I don’t care what the naysayers say, this nation was founded as a Christian nation…There is only one God and his name is Jesus. I’m tired of people telling me that I can’t say those words. ... Listen to me, If you don’t love America, If you don’t like the way we do things I have one thing to say - GET OUT. We don’t worship Buddha, we don’t worship Mohammad, we don’t worship Allah, we worship God, we worship God’s son Jesus Christ.

The New York Times noted that “thunderous applause interrupted” Terry during this portion of his sermon.

The day after the event, Santorum told reporters that he disagreed with Terry’s comments and did not applaud when he heard the comments. However, the Times reported:

As the congregation gave Mr. Terry an enthusiastic standing ovation, Mr. Santorum also stood and applauded.

Santorum’s reported standing ovation at the end of the sermon—full of religious exclusion and contempt for the First Amendment—raises even more questions about Santorum’s respect for religious freedom.

Right Wing watch noted that in addition to his remarks Sunday, Terry “has a long history of attacks against the gay community.” Click here to learn more.
