During an interview, former Senator and rumored 2012 presidential candidate Rick Santorum (R-PA) further emphasized the divide between the American Jewish community and the Republican Party by throwing racially-charged anti-choice comments at President Barack Obama. Politico reported:
Discussing Obama’s views on abortion during a two-hour sit-down with CNS News on Thursday, Santorum said the president’s pro-choice position meant he was valuing some lives over others.
‘The question is, and this is what Barack Obama didn’t want to answer - is that human life a person under the Constitution?’ he said.
‘And Barack Obama says no. Well, if that human life is not a person, then I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say “now we are going to decide who are people and who are not people.”’
Santorum, who many consider to be a leader among social conservatives, has a long history of outlandish and repulsive statements such as these. Statements like these from a presidential contender further illustrate that the Republican Party has positioned itself as an extremist party solidly against a woman’s right to choose along with many of the other policies that are supported by the vast majority of American Jews.
**Update January 21, 2011**
Politico reported that Santorum is standing by his comments. His refusal to apologize raises significant question about Santorum’s judgment.
