The National Jewish Democratic Council today remembers former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, and we extend our deepest condolences to the former Prime Minister’s family and to all of Israel.

Yitzhak Shamir was a man who dedicated the whole of his life to the Jewish people; his was a life-long commitment to the pursuit of Zionism. For Mr. Shamir, the continued security of the State of Israel was an enduring mission. As one of Israel’s founders, it is thanks in part to his own personal determination that the modern State of Israel exists today.

May Yitzhak Shamir’s memory always be a blessing.

Today, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, speaking on behalf of the President, issued the following statement regarding Shamir’s death:

“Yitzhak Shamir dedicated his life to the State of Israel. From his days working for Israel’s independence to his service as Prime Minister, he strengthened Israel’s security and advanced the partnership between the United States and Israel. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the people of Israel.”
