Fact Check: Obama Administration Condemned Palestinian Square Naming

David Streeter — March 18, 2011 – 12:05 pm | Barack Obama | Israel | Stop the Smears | Terrorism Comments (2) Add a comment

The Obama Administration forcefully condemned the Palestinian Authority’s decision to move forward with plans to name a square in honor of Dalal Mughrabi, despite claims to the contrary. Mughrabi was a Palestinian terrorist who killed 37 Israelis, including 13 Israelis, in 1978.

Speaking on behalf of the Secretary of State and at the outset of a State Department briefing, not in response to any question, the State Department spokesman took pains to “condemn this commemoration of terrorism” and noted that the Obama Administration has “conveyed our deep concern about this incident to senior officials in the Palestinian Authority….” To read more, see the State Department transcript here.

Then why did it take a FULL YEAR for him to say something?  He knew about this since March of LAST YEAR.

In fact the Obama Administration addressed this issue squarely one year ago today. Secretary Clinton condemned the proposed naming of the square on March 22, 2010 – see http://www.state.gov/secretary/rm/2010/03/138722.htm. This most recent State Department statement was issued in response to the Palestinian Authority’s decision to move forward with previously announced plans.
