State Department Affirms Israel’s Right to Self-Defense

State Department spokesman Mark Toner announced yesterday that the Syrian government was responsible for inciting the recent border violence against Israel, and appropriately affirmed Israel’s right to defend itself.

During the State Department’s daily press briefing, Toner said:

We’re obviously deeply troubled by attempts yesterday to cross the disengagement line in the Golan Heights, resulting in both injuries as well as the loss of life. As we did previously, we condemn what appears to be an effort by the Syrian Government to incite events and draw attention away from its own internal issues. And it’s clear that such behavior will not distract international attention on Syria’s - the Syrian Government’s condemnable behavior on its own citizens. And I just would add that Israel, like any sovereign nation, has a right to defend itself.
