Pelosi Statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day

Washington, D.C. - Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day:

“Holocaust Remembrance Day is a time to honor the millions murdered for their identities and their faith, to draw strength from the defiant spirit and unyielding perseverance of those who survived, and to recommit ourselves to learning the lessons of the past and standing firm against bigotry, prejudice, and causeless hatred in our time.

“This day is a reminder of those who perished, those who fought back, and those righteous among the nations who risked their lives to protect the lives of their neighbors.  On this solemn occasion, the silenced voices of the millions of victims still echo in our hearts and still remind us, with each passing year, that ‘never again’ must be more than a mantra - it must be a promise made and kept, in word and deed.

“This week, Members of Congress will mark Holocaust Remembrance Day by planting a tree in honor of Anne Frank.  Even as she hid, fearing for her life, this young girl never lost hope; as she wrote in her diary, ‘I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart…that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more.’

“In that same spirit, let us always embrace hope and demonstrate that Anne Frank was right; through our actions, let us build a future of peace and tranquility, justice, equality, and freedom for all.”
