On Wednesday, the Republican-led House of Representatives is planning to hold a vote on whether or not to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA)—the health care reform legislation passed by the 111th Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama last March. The Republicans are so focused on repeal, that they seem to be ignoring the recent reports that all say the same thing: repealing health care reform would be a shanda for all Americans.
Just today, a new study was released by the Department of Health and Human Services which found that nearly 129 million Americans qualify as having pre-existing medical conditions in the eyes of most insurance companies. Under ACA these same 129 million Americans would no longer be denied coverage from health insurance companies, let alone subjected to sky-high premiums.
However, under the Republican Party’s plan to repeal ACA, nearly 129 million Americans would be at risk of being denied coverage or dropped from their existing coverage because of the previous practices demonstrated by the health insurance industry. We cannot allow Americans to lose their health care benefits because the Republican Party wants to play partisan games and serve the interests of corporations.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius wrote recently about the benefits that are starting to take hold as a result of ACA’s gradual implementation. But, as Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) wrote on Friday, America’s families, seniors, and small businesses will lose out on the badly needed benefits contained in ACA if the Republican Party’s plans succeed.
And if that is not enough, the Congressional Budget Office published a report saying that ACA’s repeal would add $230 billion to the deficit over time!
You can help stop a major shanda from taking place by letting the Republican Party’s leadership know how you feel about their plans to repeal the health care reform legislation!
* Tell House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) to serve all Americans instead of the certain corporate and extremist right-wing organizations that want to destroy health care reform;
* Call House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) - the only Jewish Republican in the House - and explain to him why your Jewish values inspire you to support the health care reform package;
* If you live in a district represented by a Republican (you can find that out in the box in the top-left corner here), call and explain to them why your community needs the health care reform laws to stay in place; and
* Contribute to NJDC so that we can continue to protect health care reform by powerfully asserting Jewish values into the debate.
With your help, we can stop the Republican Party from depriving access to affordable, quality health insurance to millions of Americans.
