On Friday, a group of Congresswomen, including WLN Honorary Co-Chairs Nita Lowey and Jan Schakowsky, sent a memo to the GOP “in the spirit of moving past partisan politics and working together to ensure America’s women and their families have the economic security and opportunities they need to succeed.”
The memo asks that Republicans stop focusing on “dead end bills” that would penalize women and require them to pay more for insurance plans that cover abortions. Once again, this bill is being discussed by the all-male committee. In a hearing held last week, the Republican’s own witness, law professor Helen Alvaré, criticized Congress for focusing on abortion legislation instead of an economic agenda that actually benefits women and families.
One of the programs cited by Professor Alvaré—paid family leave - is at the top of the Democrat’s comprehensive women’s economic agenda.
The WLN is proud to have such dynamic Honorary Co-Chairs, and we will work with them and our friends in Congress to ensure that a Comprehensive Women’s Economic Agenda is passed.
