U.S. Threatens to Shun Military Drill with Turkey If It Bans Israel

According to Haaretz, American officials have announced that they will not participate in a joint military drill held in central Turkey if the Turkish government refuses to include Israel.  Invitations for the cooperative international military exercise were extended to numerous countries, but not to Israel.

The multinational NATO drill, scheduled for the middle of October and hosted by the Turkish Air Forces, has been conducted since June 2001.  Codenamed “Anatolian Eagle,” the military exercises seek to increase international aerial cooperation and train air force members of the participating countries in the latest aerial strategies and technologies.

The Obama Administration’s reaction comes as part of a continued effort to pressure Turkey into easing its tensions with Israel.

Israel is the most critical country country in the Mideast, plus Turkey. It is the only demcratic and the most stabilized country in that general area. Turkey should realize that Israel is the most trusting ally it can depend on.
