Romney the Only Candidate with a So-Called “Jewish Problem”
National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) President and CEO David A. Harris issued the following statement in response to the American Jewish Committee’s (AJC) 2012 Survey of American Jewish Opinion. Harris said:
The survey results released by the AJC confirm what we’ve been saying all along: the more Jewish voters get to know Mitt Romney, the more they remember why they overwhelmingly supported President Obama in 2008. Further—as we noted previously—Obama is doing better among Jewish voters against Romney than he did in 2008 against Senator John McCain (R-AZ). For all the GOP’s predictions and all of the ink spilled regarding the future of the Jewish vote, it is abundantly clear through this poll and others conducted in the last year that only one candidate has a Jewish problem—and his name is Mitt Romney.
AJC found Obama leading Romney 64.9%-24.1%, with 9.9% undecided. At this time in 2008, Obama led McCain 57%-30%. The only apples-to-apples comparison is between a poll like this done in September of this election cycle with a similar one conducted at the same point in the 2008 cycle—NOT a comparison with the final 2008 election result, some two months later. Comparing September, 2012 results with November, 2008 results is comparing apples to oranges. When these September, 2008 and September, 2012 results are compared, Obama is doing 8 points better against Romney in 2012 than against McCain in 2008.
When one adds the undecided respondents—which split 63% for Obama and 27% for Romney—to the original numbers, Obama leads Romney by approximately 71-27, which is consistent with other recent polls.
