Congress’ Ironclad Support for Israel

Less than one week after President Barack Obama asked Congress to authorize an additional $205 million dollars for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, the House of Representatives passed legislation appropriating those funds to Israel. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman (D-CA) said in a statement about the passage:

“With nearly every square inch of Israel at risk from rocket and missile attacks, we must ensure that our most important ally in the region has the tools to defend itself. The looming threat of a nuclear-armed Iran, and the persistent threat posed by Iran’s allies Hamas and Hezbollah, only serve to reinforce our longstanding commitment to Israel’s security. The President’s unprecedented request and the House’s quick approval speak for themselves— both President Obama and the Congress are actively and unshakably committed to Israel’s security.”

Representative Steve Rothman (D-NJ) even went as far to say that Obama is “the best president on U.S.-Israel military and intelligence cooperation in American history” because of the quick passage of the Iron Dome request and the overall increase in strategic cooperation compared with that of President George W. Bush.
