Illinois Democrats Stand for Jewish Values

David Streeter — October 28, 2010 – 9:37 am | Democrats | Domestic Policy | Election 2010 | Israel Comments (0) Add a comment

This election cycle Illinois Democrats are facing serious challenges from the right.

From education to women’s rights and preserving Social Security to defending Israel, these Democratic candidates support the values of the Jewish community. We need your help to keep Illinois blue and ensure that elected officials are representing our values.

NJDC has prepared fact sheets on each one of these candidates. Click each name to view their fact sheet.

Governor Pat Quinn (D-IL)

As Governor, Quinn has increased funding to Jewish social service agencies and made strengthening Illinois-Israel ties a cornerstone of his plan to stimulate Illinois’ economy. Quinn believes that the State’s foreign trade office in Jerusalem is an economic incubator for green jobs, energy independence, and alternative energy projects in Illinois.

Senate candidate State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias (D-IL)

Giannoulias believes that America’s “first commitment in the Middle East must be the security of Israel, our strongest ally in the region.” He is an emphatic supporter of Israel’s right to defend itself and strongly supports the sanctions effort designed to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran. As State Treasurer, Giannoulias worked to divest Illinois’ pension funds from companies that do business with Iran and, instead, purchased $30 million in Israel bonds because of their strong investment value.

Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL)

Schakowsky, who is Jewish, has amassed a stellar pro-Israel voting record that could be the basis for which other members of Congress are judged. She stands for Israel’s right to defend itself and consistently supports Israel’s efforts to achieve a negotiated peace settlement with the Palestinians. She fights for progressive values and has truly been a friend to the Jewish community in her district.

House of Representatives candidate Dan Seals (D-IL)

Seals is running to pick up the open Illinois congressional seat previously held by Republican Representative Mark Kirk (R-IL). Seals is proudly pro-Israel and has received an endorsement from the bipartisan Joint Action Committee for Political Affairs Committee (JACPAC), which cited his commitment to strengthening the US-Israel relationship. He stands for progressive values and will be a powerful voice for the Jews in his district.
