Jewish Voters Will Stay With Democrats, Scholars Say

A shift among American Jews toward the Republican Party in the upcoming election is highly unlikely, according to the AP. While the GOP has been fervently courting Jewish voters, scholars say that “any revolution in the U.S. Jewish vote won’t occur any time soon.

Steven M. Cohen, director of the Berman Jewish Policy Archive at NYU, told the AP that “Jewish voters’ preferences depend on their views on economic justice and social diversity,” views that are in step with those of the Democratic Party. Indeed, a recent study by the American Jewish Committee showed that on issues including health care, the economy, and foreign policy, American Jews overwhelmingly support President Obama and the Democratic Party.

Ultimately, Cohen and other scholars agree that despite the GOP’s best attempts to make inroads with the Jewish community, it’s simply not going to happen—the Republican Party is far too out-of-touch with the values of most American Jews.
