Kampeas Calls Out Cantor, Kirk, and GOP for Distortions

JTA’s Ron Kampeas has posted two new blogs combating the Republican Party’s recent distortions regarding Israel and the American Jewish community.

Kampeas’ first post addressed the recent poll conducted by McLaughlin & Associates – a polling firm that works closely with the GOP – that claimed Jewish voters would abandon President Barack Obama in the next election. Kampeas thoroughly picked the poll apart and concluded:

“The whole poll is so skewed as to be otherwise useless.”

Kampeas even specifically cited conservative analyst Michael Barone’s recent conclusion from the Florida-19 special election, in which Democrat Ted Deutch won by a significant majority in America’s most heavily Jewish district:

“There’s likely to be very little falloff in Democratic percentages among Jewish voters.”

Kampeas’ second post addressed the recent distorted statements released by House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) and Illinois Republican Senate Candidate Mark Kirk (R-IL) regarding how The New York Times spun a speech given by President Barack Obama. Cantor and Kirk worked themselves up about very little by believing that Obama said that Israel was costing Americans “blood and treasure.” The fact is, Obama used the term to describe all conflicts in the Middle East – including Iraq and Afghanistan (where “blood and treasure” are at stake). Kampeas included the full text of this remark, which was given at Obama’s nuclear summit earlier this week.

Regardless of whether Cantor and Kirk meant to push a distorted agenda or genuinely believed their own hype, the two of them did not do their homework on the matter. Kampeas easily debunked their statements through simple fact checking.

This is at least the second time in a week that the GOP has used blatant myths and distortions to smear Obama and question his support for Israel.
