FL 19: Democrat Wins with Help from Jewish Community

In response to Ted Deutch’s victory in the FL-19 special election, National Jewish Democratic Council CEO Ira N. Forman issued the following statement:

Ted Deutch’s victory is not only a testament to his record and campaign but it is also an indication that American Jewish voters remain an overwhelmingly Democratic constituency. President Obama took about 65% of the vote in FL 19 in 2008 and tonight Ted appears to have taken 63% in a relatively low turnout special election.

For the last eight election cycles Republican Jews have predicted gains among Jewish voters and for the last eight cycles, election results proved them wrong. Just this week they made the same claims for 2010 and just tonight the Deutch victory in this most Jewish congressional district proves them wrong again.

This congressional election is not only notable because it took place in the most heavily Jewish district in the country, but also because it was the first election since the passage of health care reform. It is clear that Jewish voters remain loyal to Democratic Party ideals. We believe that tonight’s results are a good indicator that strong Democratic candidates will fare quite well in the 2010 mid-term elections.
