“Values Voters” Select Candidate with Miserable Israel Record in Straw Poll

As further evidence of the ever-widening chasm separating today’s conservative movement from most American Jews, the majority of the voters at this weekend’s Values Voter Summit straw poll selected Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) as their preferred presidential candidate. Not only does Paul advocate for domestic policy positions that are opposed by most American Jews, he has a miserable record when it comes to Israel.

In addition to him labeling the Gaza Strip a “concentration camp” and attempting to defend the Iranian nuclear weapons program, Paul consistently uses his clout and vote to work against the U.S-Israel relationship. Notably, he proposed an amendment to cut aid to Israel, voted against Iran sanctions, and even insisted that the United States stop supporting Israel

Paul’s record on Israel is so bad that Jewish Republicans preemptively sounded alarm bells before current presidential campaign began.

Saturday’s win was not Paul’s first straw poll victory: He won both the 2010 and 2011 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) straw polls. No matter how much conservatives try to dismiss him, Paul is a force to be reckoned with in the Republican Party—especially as he continues to post high fundraising numbers. Paul’s continued ascendancy will continue to remind the sweeping majority of American Jews why they continue to support the Democratic Party.
