Columnist Gerald F. Seib wrote in The Wall Street Journal today that in spite of recent “slight disagreements” between the United States and Israel (which Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has declared “behind us”), defense cooperation between the U.S. and Israel remains very close. Seib wrote:
”... [B]eyond [the] headlines, the two countries actually have undertaken a broad effort at military and strategic cooperation-including supplying Israel with sophisticated American military equipment-to counter threats from Iran and Hezbollah fighters armed by Syria.”
According to Seib, the main goal is to “[make] it clear that there is a robust American-Israeli security relationship” in order to “[prevent] miscalculations by the Middle East’s more dangerous characters.”
Additionally, Seib wrote that both Israeli and American officials have said that defense cooperation has “thrived” under President Obama.
Seib concluded his piece with a very cogent and concise analysis of the situation:
”... [A]s in all matters Middle Eastern, the situation isn’t entirely as it appears on the surface.”
It’s good to see that a major American daily newspaper has written about this important and essential truth about the U.S.-Israel relationship. (NJDC has blogged about this topic here, here, here, here and here.) The truth about U.S.-Israel defense cooperation completely contradicts the viral, wrongheaded claims being circulated by partisans and activists looking to damage President Barack Obama at the expense of U.S.-Israel ties.
